Penny Fuller (7:30 PM)

Penny Fuller

Penny Fuller won critical plaudits on Broadway for her portrayal of the outwardly sweet but inwardly subversive Eve Harrington in Applause (1970-1972), the musical version of All About Eve with Lauren Bacall as Margo Channing. Debuting in The Moon Besieged (1962), she later appeared as a replacement in the original productions of Barefoot in the Park (1963) and Cabaret (1966).Her last Broadway musical (to date) was Richard Rodgers' 1976 flop about Henry VIII, Rex, in which she appeared opposite Nicol Williamson and Glenn Close. (She has continued to work in musicals, however, including the original production of William Finn's A New Brain and a 1999 revival of Rodgers' Do I Hear a Waltz? at New Jersey's George Street Playhouse.) Recent years have found Miss Fuller back on Broadway, in the original productions of Wendy Wasserstein's An American Daughter (1997) and Neil Simon's The Dinner Party (2000); she was Tony-nominated for the latter. Off-Broadway appearances have included Three Viewings (1995) and Nicky Silver's unsettling Beautiful Child. Penny Fuller has extensive television work to her credit, perhaps most memorably in her Emmy-winning performance as Mrs. Kendal in TV version of Bernard Pomerance's play The Elephant Man (1982) and in another stage-to-TV presentation, the 1985 version of Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, in which she played Mae (a.k.a. "Sister Woman") opposite Jessica Lange and Tommy Lee Jones. She has guest-starred in dozens of TV series, including The Edge of Night (1964), Love, American Style (1969), The Bob Newhart Show (1972), Banacek (1973), Trapper John, M.D. (1979 and 1981), One Day at a Time (1983), The Love Boat (1983 and 1985), L.A. Law (1988), Murder, She Wrote (1988 and 1993), China Beach (1989-90), Quantum Leap (1992), NYPD Blue (1994), Mad About You (1994-95), Melrose Place (1994-95), ER (1995), Law & Order (1998) and Judging Amy (2002 and 2005). Her big-screen work has included All the President's Men (1976) and The Beverly Hillbillies (1993).

"Ms. Ross is a master class in how to sing jazz inside out, upside and down......Her sense of time and rhythm will fracture you...." ~ Rex Reed

Annie Ross has been an abundant contributor to the art of jazz for over 50 years. Born in the UK, she has been a permanent resident of the USA for many years and a US citizen since 2001. The following are some highlights of what has been a long and illustrious career in jazz:

Annie Ross is one of the pioneers of vocalese and the composer of "Twisted", one of the most well known examples of that art, as well as "Farmers Market", quot;Jackie" and many others. A founding member of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, considered the greatest jazz vocal ensemble of all time, her influence is present in all subsequent practitioners of vocalese. “Twisted“ has been recorded by a host of vocalists, including some not normally associated with jazz, including Joni Mitchell and Bette Midler.

Annie Ross toured in the 50’s with the extraordinary Lionel Hampton band that included Art Farmer, Clifford Brown, Gigi Gryce, and Quincy Jones. Ms. Ross has recorded with James Moody, Kenny Clarke, Milt Jackson, Harry Sweets Edison, the Count Basie band, Louis Armstrong, Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Chet Baker and many more. In this variety of settings, she became known as a great jazz singer, masterful at ballads and up tempos, with the ability to swing hard, improvise and make every lyric meaningful and revealing.

As a child, Annie Ross entered a talent show on the radio accompanied by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, which resulted an a six-month contract with MGM. She went to Hollywood at age eight where she appeared in "The Little Rascals" singing a jazz version of "Loch Lomond." At age eleven she appeared as Judy Garland’s sister in "Presenting Lily Mars." At age 14 she composed the song "Let's Fly", which was subsequently recorded by Johnny Mercer and Jo Stafford.

In Paris in the late 40’s, she met up with musicians involved in modern jazz, including James Moody, Kenny Clarke, Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, Billy Strayhorn, and displayed an unerring ear and savvy sense of harmony, which was much appreciated. At 19, she recorded “Le Vent Vert” with Moody. Back in the U.S. at age 21 she recorded for Savoy, along with Clarke, Milt Jackson and Percy Heath. She worked on 52nd St. with Max Roach, Tommy Potter and George Wallington and subbed for Billie Holiday at the Apollo Theater. The original recordings of “Twisted” and “Farmer’s Market” were done in 1952 with Wallington on piano and Art Blakey on drums.

Annie Ross has continued to bring the essence of jazz to a broad spectrum of listeners internationally, by touring, through her recordings, conducting workshops, writing, and appearances in film, television and radio.

Currently, Annie Ross is living in New York and is still active as a jazz performer, having recently performed in New York, Scotland, and Spain as well as having recorded a new CD, Let Me Sing..

Danielle Grabianowski is the 2008, "1930's Idol" and most recently, came in 2nd in the Metropolitan Room’s Metrostar Talent Challenge where she was called, "one of those performers who can remind a listener of many predecessors, yet instantly seems newly-minted and already defiantly resists being fitted into anyone else's mold" by *The Huffington Post*.

Danielle was born in the suburbs of Buffalo, NY and moved to Florida's Tampa Bay Area when she was 13. After unsuccessfully trying out for various sports teams and academic clubs, she was finally cast in her high school drama club's production of Grease. Following this initial success she decided that a career in the performing arts would be the most logical way to go and went on to obtain a degree in Musical Theater from Florida State

University. Sigali Hamberger

sigalihamberger

In a departure from her take on the classics that earned her this year’s 1930s Idol title, Sigali explores a more contemporary and  complex set of standards, art songs, and Broadway gems from Arlen and Azanavour to Bernstein and Bucchino. She lends her shimmering soprano to the contemporary works of Sondheim, Guettel, and Yeston along the way. Musical Direction & Arrangements by Ido Alexander;  Directed by
Eric Michael Gillett.
Rodgers and Hart were on to something when they wrote about the noble pursuit of singing for one’s supper. Sigali wants nothing more than to do just that. She is thrilled to be this year’s reigning 1930s Idol champion, particularly because of her affinity for the popular music of the early 20th century. Her theater work includes roles inThe King & I, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, SheLoves Me, The Mikado, Country Club, and A Christmas Carol. More recently she finds at home on the cabaret stage singing the standards--both classic and contemporary--from the American songbook to Broadway.Sigali has a BA from the University of Pennsylvania, where she did not study theater, and an MBA from Rice, where she did not study singing. She happily credits these experiences for the knowledge that there is no effective intervention for singers—nor should there be! Sigali studied acting at The Neighborhood Playhouse and Circle in the SquareTheater Schools, and has 10 years of classical voice training.

Les Bandits (7:30 PM)

Elisabeth Cernadas & Les Bandits

fuckyeah

"Using mostly material from the 1960s, sung in French and English, Les Bandits’ show is fascinating and unusual—to say the least—in its musical accompaniment: all on the small cabaret stage, we have a glockenspiel, melodica, sax (these three all by Chris Shade) cello, bass, ukulele, drums, percussion. And a harp! Versatile, glowing and girlish, with lovely high tones, Elisabeth Cernadas does all the singing and spoken intros. Certainly this is an ensemble triumph. They appreciatively listen to each other and have a striking serenity. Intelligent, and a valentine to the music and era, joy radiates and the musicianship is as marvelous to drink in as to watch being played: struck, strummed, bowed, etc. Whatever they play and sing—Oscar Brown, Jr.’s “Forbidden Fruit,” a couple from The Beatles’ White album (“Rocky Raccoon,” “Blackbird”) and “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” (in French!!), their original “Uke Song,” French poetry, sweet innocence or knowing sophistication—it’s all smartly done, fresh, winsome, and unaffected. Fantastique." Rob Lester Cabaret Scenes

"Songs of Albert Hague"

directed by Eric Michael Gillett
musical direction by Tex Arnold with special guest Jon Burr on bass

christinereisner

Christine Reisner will appear at New York City's Metropolitan Room to premiere a retrospective of songs by her late uncle, TONY-Award winning composer Albert Hague. Directed by Eric Michael Gillett and featuring pianist Tex Arnold and Jon Burr on bass, the evening celebrates the oeuvre of one of America's national treasures. Interpreted with insightful warmth and wit by Christine Reisner, the musical world of Albert Hague comes alive in this winning one-hour show.

Riding high on the success of her recent CD release "Beginner's Luck," currently receiving airplay around the country and by Jonathan Schwartz on WNYC, Christine Reisner pays tribute to the magic of her uncle's life and work. From the tender age of seven she immersed herself in his music. Her anecdotes are much more than just oral history, but rather a heartfelt, sometimes comedic journey that completes her unique presentation of the songs by her revered Uncle Albert.

Christine made a name for herself as a cabaret star in France and as a dancer in the company of the famous Alwin Nikolais. Her guest appearances with other choreographers (including Beverly Blossom and Henning Rübsam) garnered her praise by such critics as Jennifer Dunning, who commented in The New York Times on Christine's work with Rübsam: "... his gift for celebrating a dancer's individual qualities comes to the fore. The solo makes the most of the charming Christine Reisner and her skill at quicksilver physical and emotional shifts."

Christine Reisner

Meryl Romer (7:00 PM)

Meryl Romer

Romer

So Sure, by Meryl Romer

Chosen by Susan Frances of Jazztimes.com

As the #1 new jazz CD for 2009

“It’s been a long time since I’ve heard such a luscious and soulful performance.Meryl took the house by storm!

Joe Franklin, Bloomberg Radio

Jazz vocalist Meryl Romer made her debut as a solo artist with her album So Sure released by Lady Pearl Music in April 2009.  Since its release, Romer has been playing shows throughout her home state of Colorado and returning periodically to her birth place of New York City steadily building a broad fan base that has fallen under her spell, and what a nice spell it is to be under.  Romer’s music brims with nostalgic jazz motifs resembling the classic creases of Ella Fitzgerald and the satiny pitch of Doris Day.  Romer’s rendition of American standards like “Lady Is A Tramp”, “Big Spender”, and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” is dreamy with a pinch of heady emotions.

"Romer has been busy performing tracks from So Sure live in concert halls across America where jazz music is played and accompanied by musicians who are classic jazz aficionados like herself.  Meryl loves to see new faces in the crowd and can guarantee a night that you will want to go on forever."

Susan Frances…Allaboutjazz.com

Meryl’s music collaborators for her April performance are Erik Deutsch, piano (reviewed in March 2010 Downbeat and Jazz Times Magazines for his recent release of Hush Money); Jonti Siman, bass; and Marc Dalio, drums.  They create pulsing modern jazz arrangements that support Meryl as she breathes love and life into her tunes.

Sings Connie Francis

Jennadec09

JENNA ESPOSITO – a 2008 and 2009 MAC (Manhattan Association of Clubs) Award Nominee
for “Best Female Vocalist” – will bring poodle skirts and puppy love back to the big
city with her critically acclaimed show, “Jenna Esposito Sings Connie Francis.”

“Jenna Esposito Sings Connie Francis”is an engaging and endearing time capsule that
revisits the musical world one of the most beloved and best-selling female vocalists
of the 20th Century. Directed by Lennie Watts with musical direction by Fortune
Esposito, the show features a five piece band and backup singers, complete with
period vocal arrangements. Jenna explores the ups and downs of Connie’s legendary
career, her hidden love with fellow teen idol Bobby Darin and Jenna's touching
personal story of meeting the great lady herself. Like Connie’s eclectic output, the
show ranges from pop hits such as “Where The Boys Are,” “Stupid Cupid“ and “Who's
Sorry Now,” to rock and roll classics to numbers from her landmark foreign language
albums.

What The Critics are Saying about Jenna Esposito Sings Connie Francis!!
"I can't imagine a better or more fitting tribute to Connie Francis.  It may seem
fatuous to label this show perfect, but the truth is there is not a thing I would
suggest changing; what's more, Jenna sounds spectacularly good."
-Roy Sander, columnist and critic

"If heart and soul and some impressive vocal chops, is your thing, then Jenna
Esposito Sings Connie Francis is your show."
-Elizabeth Ahlfors, Cabaret Scenes

"The show combines the best of a rock concert and the intelligence, elegance, and
detail one expects from the best cabaret... Jenna Esposito Sings Connie Francis is a
winning throwback to Francis' late 50s-early 60s heyday, sung by an engaging singer
with some serious pipes!"

Annie Ross (9:30 PM)

JAZZ LEGEND
ANNIE ROSS
EVERY TUESDAY AT 9:30!

annie-ross01.jpg

Nancy Stearns (7:00 PM)

Nancy Stearns

The First Ten Years

Stearns

With this show, Nancy Stearns marks her tenth year of solo shows with her music director, Gregory Toroian.  She celebrates that collaboration with some of her favorite songs from those shows - songs of social comment, songs featuring women lyricists, songs that bring on laughter and that bring back childhood memories, songs of the wondrous Yip Harburg, and songs that capture the pure joy of music.

Nancy first “found” cabaret as a student at Helen Baldassare’s Cabaret Performance Workshop, for which Nancy now serves as Administrator.

Rob Lester has described Nancy’s singing this way in TalkinBroadway.com: “Sometimes it doesn't take the biggest voice to make a big impact. Nancy Stearns, though quite musical, is rather a minimalist as a singer. Crisp and clear, she sings the notes lightly but doesn't sustain them; however, she sustains interest with her thoughtful renditions.”  Writing in Cabaret Scenes of her show devoted to Yip Harburg, Lester has said “Her delight in well-crafted intelligent songs is infectious. … As a lawyer who dedicated her career to progressive causes and equal right, she’s a kindred spirit to the pacifist writer of similar bent … .  As usual, her musical partners here (and on the resultant CD) are sterling pianist Gregory Toroian and bassist David Finck, supplying rich, surprising, welcome textures.”

Nancy has recorded five of her shows with Gregory Toroian and David Finck: The Words of Women (2006), Sing Me A Song With Social Significance … Or Not (2006) and With Rhyme, But For No Particular Reason (2007)This Moment (2008), and Yip Harburg: With Humor and Hope (2009).

Nancy’s CDs are available for sale at Amazon.com and Indierhythm.com, have been played on radio stations throughout the U.S. and Canada, in the Netherlands, Australia and Japan, and can be heard on internet radio.

Nancy has repeatedly appeared in the MAC award winning Any Wednesday series at Barnes & Noble/Lincoln Triangle, New York City, performing selections from her CDs, and as part of a celebration of the revival of Finians’s Rainbow at Barnes & Noble/Lincoln Triangle.

Allyn

Kathryn Allyn is a lover of the Great Lyric. Called a "vocally lustrous earful" (Philly Enquirer) and "note
perfect" (Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel), she'll journey from those clever lyrics of the song'n'dance men of the WWII years all the way to the poet singer-songwriters of the protest years; influenced by Jo Stafford
and Joni Mitchell, she's embarked upon a Quixotic quest to "leave no lyric behind". The songs, from Armed Forces Radio to the Summer of Love, from Broadway to the Wild West, are beautifully imagined by noted jazz pianist
Sheldon Forrest and feature the fantastic Tom Hubbard on bass.

He has released nine international CDs within the past ten years, written, produced and starred in a new musical and toured in over twelve countries. “Unafraid to take risks, songwriter Harris proves he has the talent to meld American musical styles—blues, folk, country, jazz, gospel, and rock—into a cohesive score.” The New York Times writes...”Mr. Harris is a supremely relaxed and tasteful crooner in the Nat King Cole tradition.” Harris stretches far beyond the jazz crooner’s province to the hemline of American jazz and vernacular music.

JAZZ LEGEND
ANNIE ROSS
EVERY TUESDAY AT 9:30!
