Nancy Stearns

The First Ten Years

Stearns

With this show, Nancy Stearns marks her tenth year of solo shows with her music director, Gregory Toroian.  She celebrates that collaboration with some of her favorite songs from those shows - songs of social comment, songs featuring women lyricists, songs that bring on laughter and that bring back childhood memories, songs of the wondrous Yip Harburg, and songs that capture the pure joy of music.

Nancy first “found” cabaret as a student at Helen Baldassare’s Cabaret Performance Workshop, for which Nancy now serves as Administrator.

Rob Lester has described Nancy’s singing this way in TalkinBroadway.com: “Sometimes it doesn't take the biggest voice to make a big impact. Nancy Stearns, though quite musical, is rather a minimalist as a singer. Crisp and clear, she sings the notes lightly but doesn't sustain them; however, she sustains interest with her thoughtful renditions.”  Writing in Cabaret Scenes of her show devoted to Yip Harburg, Lester has said “Her delight in well-crafted intelligent songs is infectious. … As a lawyer who dedicated her career to progressive causes and equal right, she’s a kindred spirit to the pacifist writer of similar bent … .  As usual, her musical partners here (and on the resultant CD) are sterling pianist Gregory Toroian and bassist David Finck, supplying rich, surprising, welcome textures.”

Nancy has recorded five of her shows with Gregory Toroian and David Finck: The Words of Women (2006), Sing Me A Song With Social Significance … Or Not (2006) and With Rhyme, But For No Particular Reason (2007)This Moment (2008), and Yip Harburg: With Humor and Hope (2009).

Nancy’s CDs are available for sale at Amazon.com and Indierhythm.com, have been played on radio stations throughout the U.S. and Canada, in the Netherlands, Australia and Japan, and can be heard on internet radio.

Nancy has repeatedly appeared in the MAC award winning Any Wednesday series at Barnes & Noble/Lincoln Triangle, New York City, performing selections from her CDs, and as part of a celebration of the revival of Finians’s Rainbow at Barnes & Noble/Lincoln Triangle.
