Metrostar Talent Challenge 2009

The Metropolitan Room hosts the second annual "Metrostar Talent Challenge" beginning July 13, 2009, with a grand finale on August 31.

When: The competition spans seven consecutive Mondays.

TRIALS: July 13, 20, 27.
QUARTER FINALS - top 18: August 3SEMI FINALS - top 10: August 10
FINALS (1st round - top 5): August 17
FINALS (2nd round - top 5): August 24
GRAND FINALE: August 31

What you could win:

The winner of the jury and audience-voted elimination-round competition wins an impressive package of prizes and professional  encouragements. The Metropolitan Room will engage several well-known professionals and artists to collaborate with the winner. The Metropolitan Room will commit to producing and presenting a new show starring the winner, in a week-long, prime-time engagement. The grand prize-winner gets a music director and stage director, a graphic designer to create marketing imagery. The club will  announce and publicize the winner's upcoming engagement. The club will make a multi-track recording of the new show for the artist.  The first and second runner-ups will also be invited to open for the winner and each will receive a live demo of their appearance.

How it works:

* An accompanist will be provided for each round.

Contestants may chose to use the accompanist provided, or may bring one with them, or accompany themselves.

Trials - 1st Round (July 13, 20, 27)

The judges and audience score each singer; the scores are tallied at the end of the evening and the top 18 vote getters move on to the next round. The top 18 finalists will be announced after the end of the third night of trials.

Quarter Finals (August 3)

A total of 18 performers compete in the quarter-finals. Each performs one new song (not the same song from their trials). The jury narrows this group down to ten semi-finalists who will be asked to prepare two new songs for the following week.

Semi Finals (August 10)

The ten semi-finalists perform two songs each. The jury and audience picks 5 finalists.Finals - 1st Round (August 17) The five finalists meet in a first final round and are asked to sing one brand new song and re-perform two of the six songs they have previously sung. In this round the contestants will be invited to tell a short anecdote about themselves or set up their performance with well-rounded patter. The finalists are asked to choose one of their previous songs for the final week while the judges will pick the other two songs for them.

Finals - 2nd Round (August 24)

The five finalists return to perform a set comprised of their own selection and the judge's two selections, woven together with patter.

Gala final Show (August 31)

The Winner and runners up are announced.
Who judges:

Two or three well-known figures in the cabaret world will serve as judges throughout the eight-week competition.

Beginning with the quarter finals, they will be joined each week by a different, celebrity guest judge (One or two of the celebrity judges may return for a second week.

The 2nd round of finals may see the return of one or more of the celebrity judges.) The owners of the Metropolitan Room, Christopher and Steven Mazzilli may also serve as judges for the competition. Throughout the Challenge audience members' voting will be factored in.  Each audience member gets 2 ballots with the purchase of a ticket. (Audience votes are combined with the judges scores)

Who is Eligible: Reflecting the Metropolitan Room's policy of booking shows spanning an eclectic range of styles -- from jazz and cabaret, to folk, pop and rock --"Metrostar" will welcome solo singers and vocal duos from a cross-section of musical categories. Applications will be pre-screened and approximately 60 performers will be chosen to compete. The competition is open to both  seasoned and up-and-coming performers who have not played a major engagement at The Metropolitan Room.

How to Apply:

Performers may apply online
(by completing a form and submitting an MP3 or web link),
or by mail (by sending application accompanied by a CD demo or recording).
